3 Tips for a Better Caprese Salad

Words by

Make the most of tomato season with these fresh tips.

1. Season Your Tomatoes

Tomatoes love three things in life: salt, fat, and herbs. If you’re skipping that first step, you’re missing out on one of summer’s best gifts, because salt makes tomatoes taste even more tomato-y. Use flakey salt for a crunchy texture and even more flavor.

2. Get Creative with Your Base

Big heirloom tomatoes? Love ‘em. Small cherry tomatoes? Those are great too, too. Peaches? Eggplant? Zucchini? The more the merrier! Most of your favorite summer produce will taste great with the Caprese treatment, so don’t be shy.

3. Bigger Isn’t Always Better

We love the look of big Gotham Greens Basil leaves on a gorgeous Caprese salad, but if you tear the leaves up or thinly slice them, you’ll release even more basil oil and, therefore, basil flavor. Just make sure there’s enough on the plate— we recommend in about 2-3 basil leaves per serving.
